Corn Calluses And Blisters In Chilren – How To Deal With Them

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Corn, Callusse and blister problems among children are common. They are extremely uncomfortable and also easily prevented from occuring. The main rource of cause is the friction produced when the skin comes into contact with foreign objects.

Corns usually are found on the toes. A corn starts as hard thick skin, close to the toe nails. The skin surrounding the corn will develope a yellowish color and will appear as a soft ring around it. The center skin is a shade of gray. the main cause is wearing tight shoes that apply pressure on the toes. Dancers are prone to corns, with tight shoes and the constant rubbing can elevate the problem.

A comfortable, roomy pair of shoes will help eliminate the problem. Using a doughnut shaped pad on the toe area, inside your shoe, will help avoid friction created. Pads medicated with salicylic acid will also help heal corns. If the corn hurts really bad, consult with a podiatrist.

Calluses are similiar to corns in the aspect of thinckening of the skin, and the yellow or grayish color it possesses. Calluses develolpe from repeated pressure to the same area of skin. People who rake leaves or use a shovel will develope such calluses. In the case of gymnasts and guitarists, these calluses, in a sense, act as protective layers of skin. Once a callus is formed, for a gymnast working on equipment such as the uneven parallel bars or on a guitarists fingers, from strumming the strings, they make the task at hand easier.

Calluses also develope on feet from tight fitting shoes or high heels. These calluses can be painful or they can act as protective skin for walking bare foot outside. These calluses form on the ball of the foot, just behing the toes, on the heels and some may form on the curvy part of the sole.

One way to avoid calluses is to avoid wearing tight shoes or high heels. Both of these will cause calluses because of the stress and amount of pressure the feet take on. Soaking feet in warm water and rubbing the callused areas with a pumice stone will remove dead skin and help in the care of calluses.

A blister is the occurance of the skin looseniing and a wartery fluid forming inside the area. Blisters are more easily formed then calluses. Blisters usually appear on hands or feet. New shoes can cause blisters to form. Doing heavy work with the hands, such as baling hay or using a shovel, will cause blisters to develope. To help protect your hands, wear gloves.

Without proper care, blisters can eventually form calluses. this can happen with a new p0air of shoes worn regularly. blisters heal on their own over time. Keep them clean and covered, using a bandaid. If the blister pops, using a medicated ointment will relieve any pain.

Prevention of corns, calluses and blisters is a better approach compared to the cure and time taken to heal. Wear protective gear such as gloves for the hands. Comfortable shoes that don’t slide on the heels. Because your feet are at the maximum size at mid-day,according to research conducted, it is best to shop for shoes at that time. Always try to shoes on and walk in the isles to test them for comfotr. Shoe pads will also help relieve pressure on the feet. When fitting your child, ask them many questions such as, is the heal slipping? Make sure the toes are at least your thumb width from the end of the shoe. When you discover the proper fitting for your child, use the same method each time they need shoes.
