Three Social Media Guidelines To Stand Out In The Social Media Crowd

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Popularity is not being part of the crowd.  This is very true when it comes to business.  Using these three simple guidelines you can stand out and gain attention.  After all, the only way to be heard is first to be noticed.

Picture yourself walking down a street.  There are a lot of people.  Everyone has a cellphone.  They are all dressed the same and their eyes are only focused on where they are headed.  Suddenly you spot a lady wearing a red dress singing at the top of her voice.  At the same time you see heads turning up.  Who in that crowd has the attention?

Of course, I’m not advocating that you post pictures of yourself wearing a red dress.  If you do, that’s OK.  Just make sure to wear some sensible shoes.  I hear high heels are hard to walk in!

Ha ha, very funny.  Still, that really is what you want to do.  In the social environment you want to be noticed.  And it only makes sense, don’t do what everyone else is doing.  So, these are the 3 social media guidelines to get you noticed:

1) Educate People

In his amazing course, Magnetic Sponsoring, Mike Dillard talks about selling a drill.  If you have never been exposed to Magnetic Sponsoring I highly recommend at least picking up the 7 free videos.  In it we learn that the easiest way to sell a drill is by first teaching how to make a hole.  This alone changed my whole way of thinking.  Doesn’t it make sense?  Nobody begins by needing a drill.  What they need is a hole!  And at some point they were taught that the easiest way to make a hole is by using a drill.  Often, the most profound things in life are also the simplest.

Everyone loves those aha moments.  I know I do.  And most people would rather learn how to do something than actually do it.  So, what if you have nothing to teach?  Actually, you have lots that you can teach.  Well, what if you’re just having a bad day?  Things just aren’t clicking.  What then?  Just use a quote!  Everyone likes quotes.  Quotation marks just lend a feeling of importance.  Someone quoted them.  They must be important!  (Be sure to give credit when credit is due.)

2) Just Be Yourself

Believe it or not, people want to know you.  Creating a successful business requires that you build relationships.  Why do you think companies work so hard to brand themselves?  When I think about computers I don’t think about the Extreme Dimension 4200.  I think of Dell.  Who comes to mind when thinking of breakfast syrup?  Mrs. Butterworth.  Do you see what I’m getting at?

People need to know who you are.  They need to see that you are a real person.  They need to feel like you are friends.  The interesting thing is you don’t have to do much to create that feeling.  The only thing that matters is the perception.  When you are perceived as a real person, when you are perceived as someone that shares an experience, an instant bond is created.  Just be yourself and be genuine.

3) Create Some Kind Of Interaction

This really is the most important part of these 3 social media guidelines.  Most people like to be a part of something.  Whether it’s sharing some views or voting on a poll.  When you create interaction between members you are no longer in the social media, you ARE the social media.  Suddenly a nexus of activity forms and you are at the center.

Maybe I should have called this the 4 social media guidelines.  There’s one more thing to bear in mind.  “Out of sight, out of mind.”  Thomas Kempis wrote this.  The saying holds true for social media sites.  Remember to participate.  The more you are seen, the more people will be able to identify with you.  Often it takes at least 7 exposures to a product before someone will buy it.  The same goes for you as a person.

I hope these social media guidelines have helped.  Just remember, be a teacher, be yourself and be active.  In no time you will find yourself at the center of the social media community.

7 Easy Knee Pain Remedies

Friday, March 19th, 2010

After a long day on your feet, knee pain sufferers know that their knees are going to be killing them. When your knees are sore you want easy relief, you want to be able to feel it right away. There are several things you can do to get simple, no-fuss reprieve from knee pain. Don’t you wish there was a list of these knee pain remedies that you could easy reference when your knee joints are throbbing? Luckily for you, there is!

  1. Give your knees plenty of rest. If you know that your knees are a touchy subject, avoid those activities that you know aggravate the pain. I know it may be hard to opt to sit out on a game of hoops with your buddies, but if you suspect it will cause more harm than good, sit it out this time. This requires actively listening to your body and its needs before your knees are hurting.
  2. Invest in a better pair of shoes. Don’t underestimate the importance of a good pair of supportive sneakers. If you are always wearing the latest style of high heels to work, it may be contributing to your knee pain. I’m not suggesting a pair of frumpy nurse shoes necessarily, but don’t sacrifice comfort for style. There are several name-brand shoes that specialize in both.
  3. Ice – The tried and true is still the best. Ice is a great remedy for knee pain. It provides comfort, or at least numbs and deadens pain, and it also helps reduce swelling. Keep several of those squishy blue reusable icepacks in your freezer for when your knee pain flares up. Wrap the icepack in a thin flannel or dishcloth so it is more comfortable against the skin.
  4. Begin exercising on a cushioned surface. Instead of running on the street for exercise, consider an indoor track. Often, the indoor track will be made of rubber that will aid in cushioning your knee joints. If you like to walk, consider walking on the grass instead of the pavement.
  5. Get some support. I don’t mean the emotional kind, although that couldn’t hurt. A good supportive knee brace can help alleviate knee pain. Be careful when selecting one that is supportive but not too tight. If the brace is too tight it may actually cause more damage by forcing the joint into an unnatural position.
  6. Warm up and stretch. Both before exercise and before you go to sleep, warming the muscles with heat (as long as you are sure you don’t have any swelling) is a good way to relax knee pain and prevent injury. Stretching is an excellent way to promote flexibility and strength in your legs.
  7. Take a pain reliever. You may assume I left the simplest for last, and you’d be right. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory is an easy way to reduce your knee pain. Doctors recommend ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and swelling in joints. It’s usually gentle on the stomach in small doses, and recent studies indicate that it may be better for knee pain in the long term as well.

Now that you have this simple list of fuss-free knee pain remedies, get to it! Try a few from the list and see how well incorporating even just one or two of these ideas will help your pain disappear.
